Who is FPU for?
It's for EVERYONE from the financially secure to the financially distressed. Over 180,000 families and individuals have attended FPU at their workplace, church, military base, or community group.

Faith & Reason, a television series several years ago that featured the sermons of Dr. D. L. Dykes, who was active in the civil rights movement, is the basis for a six week course moderated by Jim Bridger on Thursday evenings, from 7:00 to 8:30. This class begins on September 14. During each session, there is a panel discussion of snippets from Dr. Dykes sermons with topics such as “What Made Jesus Jesus?” “The Bible:  Fact or Fiction?” Was Jesus Really Raised from the Dead?” “Are There Dangerous Religious Doctrines?” If you like to think and talk about religious topics and you like to explore basic Christian ideas, this may be the class for you. An expanded description is in the box on the Adult Education section of the information kiosk.

CCPC Forum on the Great Oratorio by Handel

(from Marshall Saylors on the Messiah Forum)

“I was raised in the tradition that the law of God was to be committed to memory – the words written on the door lintels; carved on one's brow; however, it was music that bound the words to my soul; the poetry, rhythms, and tunes of great music that bound the phrases indelibly into my brain. No work does that for me as well as that great Baroque work of Handel, The Messiah.

Handel and Jennens (who wrote the libretto) take us on a tour of the minor prophets that spans nearly six hundred years until we hear the words, 'the voice crying in the wilderness . .. prepare the way of the Lord.' They included Luke's version of the birth of Christ, and Mark's version of the crucifixion. Paul's declaration and cry 'We shall be changed; the trumpet shall sound; we shall be raised,' was also included. Paul tells us that in spite of all, God is with us and that nothing can separate us from his love. The middle part of the oratorio is often glossed over when it is excerpted for Christmas and Easter, but some of the finest, most lyrical arias are featured in this portion.

We shall examine whether the Messiah was a 'Greek' hero, the nation of Israel, or God himself. Whom did Israel expect? Was Jesus that person? If not, why do we believe in him when he did not behave as people expected?

Join me for a four week Advent series on the Messiah. During the Adult Education hour (9:45 am – 10:45 am) on November 26, December 3, December 10, and December 17th we will take a closer look at Handel's marvelous oratorio, The Messiah.
