CCPC Forum on the Great Oratorio by Handel
(from Marshall Saylors on the Messiah Forum)
“I was raised in the tradition that the law of God was to be committed to memory – the words written on the door lintels; carved on one's brow; however, it was music that bound the words to my soul; the poetry, rhythms, and tunes of great music that bound the phrases indelibly into my brain. No work does that for me as well as that great Baroque work of Handel, The Messiah.Handel and Jennens (who wrote the libretto) take us on a tour of the minor prophets that spans nearly six hundred years until we hear the words, 'the voice crying in the wilderness . .. prepare the way of the Lord.' They included Luke's version of the birth of Christ, and Mark's version of the crucifixion. Paul's declaration and cry 'We shall be changed; the trumpet shall sound; we shall be raised,' was also included. Paul tells us that in spite of all, God is with us and that nothing can separate us from his love. The middle part of the oratorio is often glossed over when it is excerpted for Christmas and Easter, but some of the finest, most lyrical arias are featured in this portion.
We shall examine whether the Messiah was a 'Greek' hero, the nation of Israel, or God himself. Whom did Israel expect? Was Jesus that person? If not, why do we believe in him when he did not behave as people expected?Join me for a four week Advent series on the Messiah. During the Adult Education hour (9:45 am – 10:45 am) on November 26, December 3, December 10, and December 17th we will take a closer look at Handel's marvelous oratorio, The Messiah.”

Christmas Families 2006
Soon most of us will gather together with our families and friends to give thanks for another year of blessings and challenges. Sunday, Nov. 19, will mark the beginning of another special season at CCPC--the Christmas families season. Last year CCPC provided 48 families and 133 children with food, clothing, and toys to brighten their holidays. This year we hope again to share our love in Christ by reaching out to the members of our community who need it most. You can help by signing up on Nov. 19 to provide a toy or clothing for a child and by volunteering to help in one of the activities identified on the volunteer poster.

Christmas Families Project
Paul and Jo Bolig will again be coordinating the School Supplies Packets which are part of the larger Christmas Families project. An effort is made to provide every elementary and middle school student with a packet of school supplies. If you are interested in participating in this portion of the Christmas Families program, please purchase the following items and place them in decorated and labeled collection boxes that will be located in one of the CORNERS OF DODDS HALL.
Please note that NO #2 pencils are needed this year because so many were left over from last year's collection.
- WIDE-RULED - loose leaf notebook paper
- 4 oz. bottles of glue (NO glue sticks, please)
- 24 count box of crayons
- 12 count box of colored pencils
- GALLON size Zip Lock bags (we use these to put the school supplies in). Please purchase good quality bags as the cheaper ones won't stay closed
ALL ITEMS MUST BE AT THE CHURCH NO LATER THAN SUNDAY, DECEMBER 16TH so that there will be time to assemble the packets.
Thanks, in advance, for your support of this portion of our larger Christmas Families project.
Jo Bolig
