Tsunami Relief

The films from the devastation caused by the tsunami are shocking. Whole villages were literally wiped off the face of the earth. The pictures remind me of places I have witnessed after a tornado had blown through except the persistent flooding has added further injury. In many cases the only building left standing is the church. Many people have called to ask: What can I do to help? Can I send a check to the church and be confident it will get to the people? The answer is yes. Through the worldwide reach of the Presbyterian Church and the relief arm, Church World Service, we have people living in all the affected areas and the church has extensive experience in disaster relief. Each year when you give to the One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) offering around Easter time, most of this money is set aside for disaster relief. As soon as help is needed the resources are in place. The relief starts with immediate needs for food, shelter, medical care and sanitation. The website says that the health kits are particularly needed.

What I like about OGHS is that 91% of the money given is used for alleviating suffering. This is far higher than many relief groups like the Red Cross. You can send checks to the church to be passed on or you can be especially generous when we take the OGHS offering starting in March. This is a long term reconstruction project. Please continue to generously respond to the great need. There is something of the image of God residing in us underneath the gruesome headline of our time.

-- Reverend Brassard

ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING: Great news! So far the contribution for this year has been $4,250.00. It's remarkable what your gifts will do. From the widows of Afghanistan, the low-income families in the US, to the Bosnian refugees, this effort is making a difference in the lives of many people today. You may still make contributions - designate for OGHS, and place in the offering plate or bring to the church office. Thank you.

Dr. Emily Sippel speaking about her mission trip to India. Those on the mission trip were able to help deliver funds that were used for tsunami relief.

A letter from your Pastor:

We have a great tradition of both choral and congregational singing here at CCPC. We have had great choirs and we have sung a broad range of styles of music. You can hear a Michael W. Smith or Beethoven arrangement as the anthem on any given Sunday. We like traditional hymns and contemporary praise music. We even sprinkle in some Gospel and Taizé music. While acknowledging that no one always gets what he or she wants, Jon Youngdahl and I work hard to utilize the broad range of good sacred music available.

Although richly blessed, we are also aware that we need to recruit some more singers to our choirs and to increase congregational participation in singing. In order to help us explore new avenues to incorporate new voices and new songs, we have invited a pair of musician/consultants to work with us. The dates are set, Friday - Sunday, April 22-24, 2005, and we are calling it, "The Celebration of Singing Weekend."

The program will start with a session from 7 - 9:30 pm Friday night that will examine the role of music in worship, the relationship of choirs to congregational singing, and explore what new methods have worked in increasing participation in a choral group. The consultants will talk about the formation of praise teams and how they can be effective. On Saturday, from 10 am- 2:30 pm all singers and musicians are invited for a work session. The consultants will bring the music and work on practice techniques. The group will put together songs to be sung at the April 24 worship services.

We hope that those interested in singing, but not currently involved in one of our choirs, will come and join our regular choir members and interested youth in this exciting venture.

-James Brassard

Sharon Dennis and Doris MacDonald of "The Braeded Chord"

I am very excited about the upcoming “Celebration of Singing Weekend” to be held Friday-Sunday, April 22-24. Our featured consultants are Sharon Dennis and Doris MacDonald of "The Braeded Chord," an acoustical/contemporary folk duo that performs in a variety of venues in the Washington DC region. You can check out their website at thebraededchord.com Friday night's session will run from 7:00-9:30pm and will cover the place of music and singing in worship. Saturday will be a workshop for musicians and singers (and we invite all choir members to join us) that will cover performance and practice techniques and the integration of new music into the worship setting. On Sunday morning Braeded Chord will perform some of their music and lead participants in a repertoire from Saturday's workshop. I will be giving a homily on 1 Peter 2:1-10 “Keeping our Eyes on Jesus-The Perfecter of the Faith.” Worship Chairman Jim Bridger will be sharing a detailed invitation to all participants in next week's Caller.

Friday, April 22

7 pm Jr High Youth”Compassion”
7 pm Celebration of Singing workshop

On Friday, April 22, from 7 pm to 9:30 pm and on Saturday, the 23rd, starting at 10 am, CCPC will host two consultants who have been enlisted to help us set a direction for our music program during the early service. As you already know, the Worship Council in conjunction with Jon and James have been trying a variety of musical combinations at the early service in order to attempt to make that service more "congregational friendly" and to give it a less formal atmosphere than that at the 11 am service. Some of what we attempted this past fall and winter worked well while other attempts were less successful. We have tried to be responsive to your comments and suggestions and our hope is that the consultants will point us in a musical direction that will meet our goals for the early service.

The Friday evening session is designed to set out a philosophy and direction for CCPC based on our available talent, goals and desires. The Worship Council is very excited and optimistic about this program but we are convinced that its success hinges on your participation, so please mark your calendars and plan to attend this important planning session.

The Saturday gathering is more of a "jam session" for those of you who have some musical talent. It will be devoted to the planning and rehearsal of a music program that will be a part of both worship services on Sunday, the 24th.

So, if you are interested in CCPC's music program but your participation is limited to being a congregational singer, like me, then please attend the Friday evening session, but if your talents lead you toward a more participatory role, then please plan to attend both the Friday and Saturday meetings. Our goal is to increase the congregational participation in the music of CCPC, so don't think that you are not good enough - everyone so inclined to sing or play an instrument will be welcomed. The future of our music program depends on all of us so please come and help set a direction that will glorify God and enhance our worship experience.

          See you there!

Jim Bridger
