The Pastor's Corner

In Sunday's sermon on Jesus' parable of "The Dishonest Steward" I mentioned that the obvious point of the parable is that PEOPLE ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN MONEY (and the things money can buy). Money is to be used to heal hurts, turn lives around, and to bring good news to the despairing. Jesus was teaching his followers to see their possessions primary in matters of what they can do for others.

Most of us think our two most precious resources are time and money. It seems like there are times when we have one in abundance and a shortage of the other. Perhaps only in retirement (if we have pension and save money) do we have an abundance of both.

When I was a young parent and a new pastor I was pressed for both money and time. Thankfully I was young and very energetic and I could give my 4 young children a lot of time and attention. I read to them every night. I took them to the park almost daily. I played waffle ball with the neighborhood kids on summer afternoons. I was able to do that because I lived right next door to the church. I could run over to attend a school concert and be back in less than an hour. I could walk over to work early in the morning or late at night to get things done or attend a meeting and still be around to see my kids. I was Super Dad and loved every moment of it. I didn't have time for hobbies and I never worked on the house or yard but I was fully engaged in both my calling and fatherhood.

When I was in New Jersey I was one of only a few fathers who attended local soccer, lacrosse and cross country meets. The other fathers rarely attended because they all worked at least an hour away. Because I worked 2 miles from the school I could catch a game without taking a whole afternoon off. The other youth didn't have fathers at the games but they often had designer clothes and larger homes and enjoyed lavish vacations. I think kids would choose your time over your money.

What has always bothered me is that when people retire they often decide to sell the family home and relocate to a southern climate. They look forward to building that "new dream home" and being able to play golf or walk on the beach. It seems like the abundance of money is valued over the gift of time with family and long time friends. Although many people who relocate eventually find new friends and a welcoming community, they leave behind trusted friends and are not available to help their kids and see their grandchildren grow up. It is especially hard to make good friends when you are older.

Retirement is still over 15 years away for me. I don't know where my four children will eventually live although my guess is the New York metro area. Much of my time and treasure at that time will be targeted to nurturing the relationship with my kids and their families. People are more important then money in God's value system.

James Brassard

Spiritual Gifts

The Bible promises that each of us has received certain gifts to be used to build of the body of Christ (Romans 12:6.) and describes twenty spiritual gifts. We are called to used our gifts to meet the needs of our congregation and our communities, serving others by following Christ's example.  What are YOUR spiritual gifts?  CCPC is offering a two part class for those who want to learn more about their spiritual gifts and how to use them to glorify God.

The classes will be

Saturday, October 13 and Saturday October 20

from 1:00-4:30PM

in the Adult Education Room.

The interactive activities in the class lead you to a deeper understanding and appreciation of your gifts-- and are also a lot of fun! Anita Pesses and Margaret Hallau are leading the class.  There is a registration form on the kiosk or you can let one of them know if you are planning to participate in this class.

Many of you heard John Travis speak in May about his Katrina work camp experiences with Gaithersburg Presbyterian Church. There will be another work camp Sunday, Oct. 2 and Saturday, Nov. 3, at Olive Tree Camp on the grounds of what was once Eastminster Presbyterian Church near New Orleans. Gaithersburg Presbyterian Church has space for a few more people to go. If anyone is interested, please let me know. Charles and I are planning to go.

Theater Troupe Auditions

CCPC Theater Troupe Presents
A Kid's Night at CCPC
Why should the adults have all the fun?

COME OUT AND AUDITION ON

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 30TH

from 12:30-2:30PM.

Please come prepared with your "act." It can be a song, a dance, a skit, a comedy routine. Use your imagination! Bring sheet music if you want Susan to accompany you.

We are looking for soloists, duets, groups, production numbers, whatever you can think of. If it is entertaining, we will put it in the show. We can help you with ideas if you get really stumped. In fact, the theme of the show is:

(Drum roll)

80's Big Hair Rock Stars!

**ask your parents for inspiration** It doesn't have to be that--can be anything you can think of.

The only rule: you need to be under 18 to audition. (Sorry, the older set will have their chance in February). We may not be able to do all acts because of time constraints so: Call your friends and do some brain- storming! Show us what you got!!!

Show date -- November 17th from 7-9PM

Rehearsals are minimal, mainly Sundays. The Show is open to the community. You do not need to be a member of CCPC to audition. Proceeds to benefit Christmas Families. For more info: Contact Linda Miller, Susan Rogel or Melodie. Hope to see you there!
