The Pastor's Corner
You couldn't tell it by the record setting heat, but the summer is nearing its end. Along with the schools CCPC is preparing for our fall schedule of activities.
We returned to the fall worship schedule this past Sunday, September 9th, with 8:30 and 11AM services; and Adult Education hour and Sunday school at 9:45AM. As always there are new things happening. We need your participation and we need your volunteer efforts. Here is a list of service opportunities:
We need volunteers to -
- Create and project the PowerPoint slides for both worship services. Dennis Evans has a faithful but small team and he is looking for some computer capable folks. If you are interested call Dennis.
- We have 4 usher teams at 8:30AM and 3 for the 11AM worship services. Head ushers Paul Casto (8:30AM), and Jack Jones (11AM), are looking for new people to join their rotating teams.
- If you want to help host the coffee hour between services, Jo Bolig is setting up the spring schedule. Call her to add yourself to her cadre of hospitality hosts.
- Sunday school Superintendent Julia Leaman still has a couple of openings for Sunday school teachers.
- The Christian Education Department is expanding the "Junior Worship" program that is offered during the 11AM worship service following the Children's Sermon. There will be a worship and educational component added under Adult Supervision this year. Call Sue Evans or Laurel Cox if you would like to help as part of a rotating team.
Not only did Children and Youth classes reconvene at 9:45AM on September 9th, but Adult Education classes began. We have two offerings on Sunday mornings: "Christians and the Environment" a class led by Sheree Ruhl and John Backus. Ann Evankovich leads a unique Bible series "Uncensored Bible Stories: Bible Stories like You've Never heard Before."
On Tuesday nights, starting September 18th from 7-9PM, we will again offer the "Financial Peace University" series led by Becky Bond. If you are someone worried about debt and your financial future contact Becky Bond. If you want to know more about the Christian Faith, you can join leaders Skip and Peggy Oates as they lead the video and conversation program the "Alpha Series." Both of these successful programs are running for the third time and have many satisfied graduates.
If you want to help prepare me to preach on Sunday morning you can participate in my sermon preparation blog. I will post the text and some preliminary commentary 3 weeks ahead of the preaching date. Go to http://james-exploringtheword.blogspot.com to join the conversation. The first sermon topic will be 'Blessed are the peacemakers' on October 4th, the first in a fall and spring series on the Beatitudes in Matthew 5.
The Youth Groups are growing in size and enthusiasm. Please read about youth events under the "Youth News" section of the Caller.
Worship Notes for Sunday, September 16th:
We have been following the actions and teachings of Jesus in Luke.
Since the very beginning of the gospel we have been told that Jesus is the long awaited Messiah, God with us. The rest of the gospel tries to unpack what they means for us. If Jesus is God in the flesh, the son of God, then he is a new revelation of God and not the God whom we expected. This Sunday we will examine a controversial topic related to Luke 14:25-33, 'The Rigors of following Jesus' by asking the question: "Do Christians and Muslims worship the Same God?"
See you at 8:30 or 11AM.
Worship Notes for Sunday, September 16th:
- 8:30 & 11AM Worship Services
- Adult Education Hour & sunday School at 9:45AM
- Newcomers Brunch and Church Tour
Next Sunday, September 23rd:
- 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time
- 8:30AM and 11AM worship services
- *Adult Education Hour & Sunday School at 9:45AM
- Choirs
- Presbyterian Women of the Church Luncheon at 12Noon in Dodds Hall
- Discovery Circle at 6:30PM (Parlor)

Plea for Sunday School Teachers
A Message from the Youth:
Recently we have put out several calls asking for volunteers to work with the youth groups. Quite often we hear back from folks who would like to help, but aren't quite sure what we need. In response to these questions, here are our biggest needs:
1. Sunday School Teachers - Right now we have a teacher for every class. But for some classes we have only one teacher. This creates an awkward situation in that if that teacher gets sick, or for some other reason is not able to be there, we don't have anyone to teach the class. It would be wonderful if we could have a few folks who would be willing and able to step in when one of our regular teachers is out. The great thing is, most of our classes use pre-printed curricula. That means you don't have to spend hours preparing or thinking up ideas of what to do with the kids - it's all right there for you!
2. Sunday School Helpers - Although we have a teacher in every classroom, it's always nice to have an "extra" adult on board to help with that day's lessons and activities.
Contact Laurel Cox if you would like to serve our children in a teaching capacity.
3. Sunday Night Helpers - The Junior Highs meet Sunday nights from 5-6:30PM and the Senior Highs meet from 6:30-8:00PM. On those nights when we don't have special events, it would be nice to have an extra adult or two available to help out. This would allow us a little more supervision, as well as the ability to plan lessons and activities where we break the overall group into smaller groups for discussion.
4. Chaperones - We have an ambitious schedule for the Youth. We are trying to get them engaged with the program, with each other, and with the mission of the church. In order for us to participate in many of the events that take place outside CCPC, we need adults who can help with transportation and supervision.
Once again, we thank you for your time and energy in helping us to "teach the children well."
Please contact James Rada (ccpcyouth@verizon.net)
"Also, if you are interested in a short term role - Sue Evans will begin "Junior Worship" (formerly known as optional activity) during second service - so if you want to help for only a few weeks at a time this may be the place for you! Junior Worship will be looking for monthly adult AND teen volunteers.

Alpha Series
The "ALPHA COURSE" is coming this fall. Starting September 18, 2007 - at 7PM - led by Skip & Peggy Oates.
The classes begin with a 40 min video from an English Vicar & teacher - Nicky Gumbel - an excellent speaker. The video is followed by coffee & snacks with group discussions on the video and other questions the group brings up. What's great about the "ALPHA COURSE" is how easy it is to ask any questions you have about God, Faith, Creation, etc. This is not a lecture but a format to question & discuss many faith topics. We will start promptly at 7PM (many have brought their dinner and eaten it during the video) and end at 9PM (or earlier). Here are some people who have taken the course - ask them what they thought of the "ALPHA COURSE" - Karin & Kevin Rice - Nancy & Dick Arnold - Rusty & Richard Owen - Roxanne Johnson - just to mention a few.
So call Skip & Peggy Oates to let us know you are coming! Materials will be provided.

Paper Tigers Book Review
The Paper Tigers began their study of "The Creation" by E.O. Wilson on Wednesday September 12, 2007.
During the six weeks that made up the hot and dry dog days of August, The Paper Tigers decided to take a short break from prescribed reading-but not from unprescribed thinking. Accordingly, the group viewed and discussed a series of six one-hour discussions that Bill Moyers had with Joseph Campbell, the late author, teacher, and authority on world mythology and comparative religion. The interviews were conducted in the 1980's, shortly before Professor Campbell's death in 1987 and were broadcast originally on PBS television. Thus, many of us were viewing the tapes for the second or third time and had had some time to think about the rich stories, which ranged from the very early verses of the Rig-Vedas, now part of the sacred scriptures of Hinduism, to the mythology of the Star Wars films.
Myth, in popular parlance, has unfortunately taken on a primary meaning of fiction or falsehood, but Joseph Campbell devoted his life to the study of myth as mankind's search for truth. He saw myth and religion as an attempt by peoples of every age and culture to understand the truth about themselves, their purpose in life, and the world that was their home. Myths attempt to explain the unexplainable, to answer questions such as: How did we get here? Who made us? What is our purpose in life? Why do we suffer? What part does God or Nature play in our world? What is the nature of the Divine? In these countless stories, diverse in detail and mode of expression, Professor Campbell found a surprising unity of meaning. A recurring theme, for example, is the sacrifice of a God or superior person: this superior being or god dies, is buried, and comes back, usually in another form, to bring greater blessings to his people. A variation on this story has the god broken into pieces and from each buried piece a life-giving plant appears. This version is common among people who depend on plant life for their food and can be found in many cultures from the Mediterranean to the Far East to the New World.
Campbell taught literature at Sarah Lawrence College for many years, and doubtless counseled hundreds of students. To those asking how to find meaning in their lives and those seeking ways to channel their talents, he had a ready answer: "Follow your bliss." This phrase was Campbell's shorthand advice that one should do what makes him or her happy, what brings out the best in one, not necessarily what seems to be rational or practical, but what brings joy. The evident pleasure with which Joseph Campbell relates the myths of history and legend shows that he listened to his own counsel. He followed his bliss.
The Paper Tigers have not become The Video Tigers. We can recommend these interviews as a stimulating introduction to the challenging subject of comparative mythology and religion. If one has a serious interest in this field, he should turn to Joseph Campbell's books, such as The Hero with a Thousand Faces, The Masks of God (4 volumes), or, if one likes illustrations with his mythology, The Mythic Image.
