The Pastor's Corner

My Presbytery assignment is the Committee for Preparation for Ministry. We help guide and oversee the preparation for ordained ministry of the dozens of men and women who feel called to the pastoral ministry. We try to assure that academic and pastoral skills are honed before we approve a candidate for ordination. National Capital Presbytery has a very rigorous process; far tougher then the one I went through 20 years ago.

We required candidates reaching the stage of being declared ready to seek a call to answer a series of questions. One such question was: What does it mean to be Presbyterian?  This insightful Young female candidate wrote:
"What it means to be Presbyterian to me has been shaped by the process of participation in several different congregations. I was nurtured in the faith as a child at a small church in the town in which we live. We also participated in the life of my grandmother's church in a different state. I was cared for by Sunday School teachers and elders within the church, some who did not know me well, but loved me anyway as a child of the church. I was taught the basics of our Christian faith in these setting."

The candidate goes on to talk about the connections in college and seminary that continued her spiritual journey. I was thinking about this as I prepared for last Sundays baptism. I was drinking from a Starbucks coffee cup and read THE WAY I SEE IT #237 that is posted on the cup.

"It's relationships, not programs, that change children. A great program simply creates the environment for healthy relationships to form between adults and children. Young people thrive when adults care about them on a one to one level, and when they also have a sense of belonging to a caring community." Bill Milliken Author of Tough Love and The Last Dropout.

Reformer John Calvin wrote extensively about "The priesthood of all believers." Calvin saw in the new Testament writings that Jesus expected all his followers, not just the church officers and pastors, to be teachers, encouragers, healers, and faith builders. You are all part of something important that is going on around you at CCPC. Keep up the good work.

Worship notes for Sunday, May 20th:
Music Sunday

Music Sunday will be a little less ambitious this year. We will hear from our combined Adult Choirs, our Children's Choir and the Bell Choir. The service will be of normal length (probably 70 minutes) Rev. Brassard will preach-"P.S. To the Ten Commandments."

Ajibade and the Youth Council will give each graduating senior a "Surviving in the Real World Toolkit."

Karin Rice will make her profession of faith by baptism.

Sunday May 27th is the Day of Pentecost.
Pentecost is the day the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples in Jerusalem and they took the story of the Resurrected Christ out into the world.

Memorial Garden Dedication

On Sunday May 27th (Memorial Day weekend), CCPC will dedicate Memorial Bricks in our Memorial Garden during a ceremony following the 10AM worship service.

These bricks are memorials that honor members and friends of CCPC who have passed on. They are installed in the brick walkway leading up to the cross in this lovely garden. The memorial walkway serves as a testimony to the faith and service of the Saints who have served the Lord in this church.

Heartfelt Thanks

I would like to thank everyone for their thoughts, calls, cards, and most importantly, their prayers. I'm a firm believer that my quick recovery from knee replacement surgery, is attributable to all of the above. Many, many thanks for the "PP" (Presbyterian Prayers). They always work! Jane Smith.
P.S. You may remember me as the long suffering wife of the world's (at least in Dick Arnold's mind) ugliest fill-in secretary!

As another year comes to a close and summer is around the corner, Jo Bolig would like to thank these individuals who adjusted their schedules and mastered a new format to host the coffee Hour between services on Sundays. Some are serious coffee drinkers themselves and others are not, but all of them contributed time and effort to provide this refreshment to members and guests on a weekly basis. Kudos to these people: Dave & Emily Conrad, Don & Dee McCarty, Paul & Jo Bolig, Jim Woods, Chuck & Marge Tanner, Steve & Myrna Webb, Margaret Hallau, Daniel Pfarrer, Bryan Linn, Barb Engh, Paul & Debbie Sell, Bob & Susan Brutout, John & Susan Mather, Ralph & Pat LoRusso, Harold & Joy Bible, Gary & Laurel Cox, Don & Judith Genson, Bob & Jackie Smith, Al & Ellen Wimbush, Dwaine & Lori Kronser, and Barry & Audrey Bahler.

Warm Nights

Warm Nights Certificate:

Community Crisis Services, Inc. (CCSi), the organization that ran Warm Nights this past year, hosted a Banquet/Auction Fund Raiser on May 9th. The theme of the night was H.O.P.E. (Helping Others Pursue Empowerment). During the event CCSi Director Tim Jansen presented Certificates of Appreciation to each of the churches that participated in Warm Nights. Paul Sell accepted the certificate on behalf of CCPC. The certificate, which reflects appreciation for the hard work of the entire congregation in supporting Warm Nights, will be displayed in the Atrium.

Church Survey Participation

I am currently pursuing a Doctoral Degree in Pastoral Ministry to build on my previous pastoral experience and enhance my skills and awareness. Through a project required as part of the coursework, I am helping do some of the ground work for establishing the community/church support groups mentioned above. YOU CAN BE A HUGE HELP by spending just a few moments answering a few questions about your personal experiences of giving and receiving pastoral care in a congregational setting. There are no other obligations beyond the survey and it is completely anonymous.
Between services, on Sunday May 13 and 20, I will be in the foyer passing out surveys that you can complete at your convenience during coffee hour.

I will also ask for volunteers to take a survey to a neighbor in the Bowie community. Together, we can help CCPC stay connected to our community. Blessings,

Shawn Jegede

May 20th is Bring Back Library Books Sunday!
The next Library Committee Meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 23rd at 10 AM.

Please remember to return all adult and children's books that you have completed reading to the basket outside our library this Sunday. The library committee will be working to get the bookshelves in order so that you may check-out books over the summer.

Community Café

Our visit to the Community Café started early on Friday, May 11th when the lunch crew met in the kitchen at 9:30 to make sandwiches and assemble the bag lunches. Helpers for this chore were Jean Gordon, Mary Hazell, Dave and Nancy Honeyford, Cal and Lois Pals, Ron and Pat Stokes and Bob and Jackie Smith.

Five of us left the church at 11:15 for the Café. Dave and Nancy Honeyford, Ralph LoRusso and Bob and Jackie Smith served a pizza lunch to 50 plus men, women and children. We handed out the bag lunches, socks contributed by CCPC members and personal care packets put together by Jane Sumner.

Thank you everyone for your help and contributions.

Jackie Smith
